Happy Monday, book peeps!
I can’t believe it’s the last day of August. For my nephew, it’s the first day of school! What a year it’s been. I’m sending good vibes to all the anxious kids and parents out there facing an unpredictable school year. Hopefully all the preparation and our months of living responsibly through these pandemic times will translate into a good transition. Fingers and toes and everything crossed!
Today it’s my pleasure to introduce you to Kat Turner, who I met through Debut 2020s! (Check us out on Twitter @2020Debuts and Instagram @debut2020s for stacks of TBR inspo!) I hope you enjoy our Q&A and learning more about Kat and her upcoming release Love, Hex, and Rock & Roll, which sounds like delightful read for the romance and magic lover alike!
Thanks for reading,
A :-) xo
Q&A with Kat Turner:
AK: Tell us a little about yourself!
KT: I wear a lot of hats! When I’m not reading or writing, I’m working for a local university, teaching yoga, or being a mom to one. I have two pet rats and too many plants, guard my gym time with my life, and am quite adept at picking up objects with my toes.
AK: What’s the premise of your book?
KT: A desperate woman visits a witch for a fast cash spell. During a weird intake session, she agrees to be initiated into her own supposedly latent powers. While struggling to learn how her new powers work, she accidently puts a deadly curse on her rock star crush and falls in love with him while struggling to lift the hex. Hex, Love, and Rock & Roll is the story of a novice magic user and the mishaps they face, the complicated nature of wish fulfilment, and the lengths we’ll go to to save what’s most sacred to us.
AK: What inspired you to write it?
KT: I wanted to smush together paranormal and contemporary romance tropes and see what happened. Also, the idea of having magical powers is highly symbolic and rich with potential for exploring all sorts of themes including personal empowerment and what it means to believe in oneself and go all in when fighting for what we want. Hex, Love, and Rock & Roll explores these deeper concepts while maintaining a quirky, offbeat tone.
AK: What are you most looking forward to this debut year? And conversely, what are you most nervous about?
KT: I can’t wait to promote Hex, Love, and Rock & Roll and share it with the world! I love the book and want everyone to read it and adore it as much as I do. Of course, I’m a little nervous about reviews, but at the same time I’m confident that the book will find the right audience of fans.
AK: What authors do you admire and/or have influenced your development as a writer? Please feel free to add specific books, we love recommendations!
KT: My favorite author is Jayne Ann Krentz. Her writing style and subtly humorous voice inspire me. I also love Cara McKenna, Alyssa Cole, J.R. Ward, and Patricia Briggs. Right now I’m devouring Faker, a contemporary romance by Sarah Smith, and just finished Kind of Famous by Mary Ann Marlowe. Love Lettering by Kate Clayborn was also phenomenal, making three fabulous reads in a row! I’ve also read some really cool stuff on the non-romance front lately, including The Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo. I devour domestic suspense and thrillers, too, like The Silent Patient and anything by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkannen.
AK: What are you working on now?
KT: I just finished, as in finished today, a novella prequel to my upcoming series! This book introduces the heroines of books 4 and 6 and foreshadows some spooky, upcoming paranormal mysteries.
AK: What question do you wish I had asked, and answer it!
KT: I think you covered everything, Anita! Thanks so much for having me.
Release date: Summer 2020.
Helen Schrader is a desperate woman. With her business skidding toward bankruptcy and her bank account bone dry, she’s willing to do the unthinkable: hire a witch to cast a money spell. But when the spell sets in motion her own latent magic and her inexperience causes her to accidentally hex her celebrity crush, rocker Brian Shepherd, all that good fortune she hoped for flies out of the window.
Now, Helen and Brian struggle to break the curse and tackle their growing feelings for each other. Problem is, the harder they fall for each other, the deadlier the curse becomes.
But as a dark magic cult with an unquenchable thirst for power closes in on them, the couple will have to face more than just their inconvenient desire. With time running out and danger mounting, can they beat the hex before Brian becomes its next victim?
